Floral Pendant Light

Timber is a fascinating material to work with because of the limitless potential it holds, as well as the natural beauty it holds that you can't replicate with any other material. Furniture design is a wonderful example of the shapes and forms that wood can take, making it no surprise that even high-end establishments use it for their decor.

This pendant lamp makes use of local Hoop Pine plywood in a flat-pack design to create this simple but elegant floral lighting feature. The kerfing pattern on the leaves not only allows the material to bend downwards, creating a more organic shape, but also creates a beautiful shadow on the ceiling when lit up; making for a uniquely stunning appearance.

Shape and Form

Designing the shape of the lampshade took quite some time, because I needed a way to keep this design solid and easy to assemble.

To achieve its bend, I used a kerfing pattern that allowed the wood to bend without resistance, then I clamped the sheets together in a bent position so that they'd hold their position, and from there, gravity would hold their shape.

Lighting Pattern

The secondary reason for using a kerfing pattern is that it creates a beautiful shadow above the lampshade, which allows this light to act like a centre piece, rather than a background item.
